Steam & Excursion > Southern (CP) 2839 blasting out of New OrleansDate: 02/25/20 10:46 Southern (CP) 2839 blasting out of New Orleans Author: gcm Nov 79
2839 is leaving New Orleans on the Southern to Hattiesburg. It made two roundtrips this weekend. I rode the day before and did some chasing on Sunday. The Southern liked the 2839 but had trouble with it being not powerful enough on some excursions. This was probably the case in the more mountainous regions of the Southern Railway but out of New Orleans the grade was low. Here it is pulling 15 cars most of them heavyweight. I believe the engine is now at the Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar, California, where it is on display outside the museum. These were fun times on the Southern and in New Orleans. They reached 100 mph before dropping down to lower speeds. They put his comments on portions of the run on the tape He said it rode good and the only complaint he had was that it did not hold enough sand. .
