Steam & Excursion > Nevada Northern Winter Freight Weekend II

This is my 12th year directing the runbys for the Nevada Northern Winter Steam Spectacular.  Owing to other activities on President's Day Weekend, I am down to one out of two Winter Steam weekends plus the new Winter Photography Workshop which I'll cover in a separate post.   By this time I have seen every kind of weather condition including fog and blizzards.  This year was mostly warm and dry, which lends its own look to the photos and makes you think out of the box.   We did have an unusual amount of water available for reflections as the mine was draining water down Robinson Canyon and a dam was being drained for maintenance into Steptoe Creek.

Photo 2: Engine #40 with the Hyrailer at the North Yard Crossing.  The Hyrailer is a re-creation from photos of a 1956 Pontiac Chieftan modified by Fairmont.   The original is long gone so a suitable donor car was found in Southern California and restored and modified in the Fairmont fashion.

Thanks for sharing your excellent work. 

This was my first time at the NN's photo weekend. I had visited Ely 16 years ago with my younger son for a Polar Express ride with 93. I had never seen 40 in operation and I was impressed with all the action over the weekend. Where else are you told to go where you want, just be careful. We were allowed in the enginehouse in the morning while they got the locomotives ready for the day's runs. Overall very impressed and glad I made the decision to attend. A great job by the NN staff and crews.

Thanks for sharing the photos! I went to it in 2005 and had a great time and ended up with some fantastic photos. Need to get back there again.

Was there in 2009 and 2010. Hope to return soon.
