Steam & Excursion > Sometimes A Rainy Day Is Just What A Photographer Wants!

Not all of the best steam railroad photographs were taken in bright sunshine.  There were times that the mood could be set quite well when the sky are dark and heavy with rain.

Such was the case in April 1954 when Southern Pacific #2362 was captured on film as she splashed through the puddles on Lincoln Avenue in Alameda, California.  Just look at the attention this locomotive and her short train have received, even in the pouring rain from the persons in the bar and liquor stores along the way.

The mood was appropriate for the times, as the end of steam was rapidly approaching.

Kind of looks like the photographer was shooting from the driver's seat of his car.  The train would be the Bay Area Electric Railroad Association's excursion of April 4, 1954 that toured bits of SP's former electric empire in the East Bay.  More photos and the flyer can be found in these old threads:

The photo was taken near the intersection of Lincoln Ave. and Sherman St., and the train was pointed geographic west.  Santi's Fenced Inn at 1304 Lincoln Ave. is gone, but the houses in the background are still there:

or it could have been another crew letting that passenger crew know where to go after they tied-up.........

I always think of billboards being along the highway, but here are two right in a lot in a residential area.
