The Power Of A Steam Locomotive Is Aptly Demonstrated Here!
Author: LoggerHogger

Crown Willamette Paper #3 was only 45-tons in size when she was built by the Climax Manufacturing Company in 1917, and only cost a modest $16,900.00 new, however she was still an impressive machine when we see what she could do.

Shown here in Young's River, Oregon, a few years after delivery, she is in command of a train of disconnect trucks with some very impressive old-growth logs.  She will have not trouble overcoming the grades and rough track on the line even with these huge loads given her design and the power that steam can muster even from a small locomotive like her.

There were no turning facilities on most logging railroads and CWP is no exception.  That is no matter for #3 as she works equally well in either direction.  Once the photo taking is over, the crew of #3 will open her throttle and the 180#s of steam pressure she has available will do it's magic.

Astounding! That is HEAVY wood!

But, I always remember this power comparison I heard somewhere:
Least:--gasoline,
then--diesel,
most:-- STEAM!!
