Don,

Ok, you caught me.  I had probably just tilted the spark arrestor back in place now that I have the fire lit in the firebox to start the day.

Nothing like June on the the Sacramento Delta.  By 2:00 most days the ambient temperature was 104-degrees with plenty of humididty.  For Roy and myself (we only had a 2-man crew) the cab got pretty hot as we had be ready to move the big Shay at a moments notice.

Here is a shot of me on one of the hot afternoons and a shot of Roy, the only other member of our 2-man crew.

How did you get the Shay to Sacramento a Flatcar or on a Truck ?

On a flat car. In fact, the dead-head move with 4449 stayed overnight in Bend, OR, and picked up the flat car with the Shay, and then continued on to Sacramento. After Railfair was over, the Shay was reloaded onto the flatcar, and was back in the train set with 4449, returning east up the Feather River Canyon, and on to Bend, OR.

Why did the 4449 dead-head to Railfair '99 and not pull an excursion like in 1981 and 1991 to the other Railfairs?

A number of reasons:

1) The 1999 Railfair was AFTER the UP "took over" the SP, thus a two day trip on the former SP main line from Portland to Sacramento, with an overnight stay in Klamath Falls, was no longer possible.

2) The BNSF stepped up, and agreed to handle the 4449 move from Portland, to Sacramento, which required a 3 day move. Such a long trip would have been prohibitive for a passenger excursion.

3) Liability insurance cost had sky-rocketed by then also.

Ah....  I didn't realize the Mt Emily 1 was shot at Railfair.  I assumed it was taken at Prineville.

Earl,

This should dispel any doubt as to where we were with the big Shay.

I suppose  Graham County # 1925 made the long trip from North Carolina on a flat car, too?
