A few shots from a great Roanoke-Lynchburg excursion on the N&W during the 1977 NRHS Convention in Roanoke.

(9-10) Arriving Lynchburg where the crew is uncoupling the engines.
610 will move ahead while the 4501 will diverge to the right and continue on to Alta Vista on the Southern (then back to Roanoke by way of the ex-Virginian line).

(11-13) The 610 was cut off here "due to operational restrictions at interchange points" (as described in the trip brochure).
The station was a stop for the Hilltopper.

Last picture shows what oil smoke can do to a previously clean engine.  Geee.  Bet they had to use lots of sand to clean out the flus.

I wish the BB had some of that fuel....          Overall, the pictures were disappointing.

I'd say that the chiggers and ticks had a feast that day!

An "A+" set of images. My favorite is photo seven. It captures the dramatic beauty of those two locomotives wonderfully.

An excellent excursion photo series.  Definitely like each and every one, most especially Photo 6 & 7.
Thanks for posting this series; #610 was my favorite Southern excursion steam engine.

Did they install a stoker with auger to throw sludge into the firbox of 610?   Oh...somebody rquested extra smoke on the runby.

For what it's worth,,many of the Fireman on the Southern Steam Crew were not all that adapt at firing a big oil burner, like 610. I remember that when the Southern first leased 610, both Dick Yager and myself went down to the Southern, and attempted to teach them some of the "tricks" of firing a big oil burner. Fun trip, but she still smoked a lot, especially on photo runs, thus sooting up the flues/tubes.

Aparently they did learn how to fire it since there is quite a bit of film and video when its running fast  with  a light amount of gray color in the exhaust.

There were one or two who could.  Mr. Purdie used to let the artist Mike Kotowski fire, as he had fired oil burners out west.  Kotowski could apparently fire it better than most of the steam crew.
