The morning sun is already up as the crew of Coos Bay Lumber 2-8-2T #9 prepares to leave the yard in Powers, Oregon for another day of log train duties.  While her fireman and engineer attend to oiling around her running gear, 2 others are seeing to the filing of her oil bunker.  Only when all these chores are done can the big ALCO be really ready to couple on to her train of empties and head back to the cutting area.

#9 sports class lamps and train indicator boards for the part of her trip each day over the Southern Pacific Powers Branch.  Other than those additions, she is a pure logging locomotive built for the steep grades she will encounter once she leaves the SP track.

I noticed the silver paint on the smokebox front, and wonder it that is something the SP required/requested to make the Coos Bay look like other SP trains at grade crossings.
Wonderful photo, with great gray scale in the wood textures and the curved surfaces and lots of human activity.
Thanks for your contining series of artistic and historic posts and captions, making "Logger Hogger" a must-read for me daily.
