Steam & Excursion > Sometimes All It Takes Is A New Perspective To Truly See A Place!

We have all see many, many photos of the Oakland Pier in the steam era and the activity that it was famous for.  However, few railfans thought to expose a frame of film from the perspective of a waiting passenger seeing his train approach the huge open structure from the inside.

The year is 1946 and here we see Southern Pacific #2474 and her trains as it arrives at the Oakland Mole.  This is the view so many thousand passengers would see on a daily basis.  While it may have been a common sight for them, it is a treat for us now.

I bet many happy servicemen went through that station on the way home from the pacific.

And the sign on the Albers building is just as true today as it was 74 years ago. It made my morning.

Looking at that sign I thought that it was probably coffee. So I Googled it and it turns out that it is grits. Still available today.

The late KeyRoute would approve.

This may be excessivelt nit-picky Martin, but passengers waiting for or boarding their outbound trains would almost never see their train approaching the Pier.  The train shown is inbound.  Outbound trains would be brought to the gate for loading far before the outbound passengers arrived.....unless one took an earlier ferry just for the purpose of seeing their outbound train spotted at the gate.
Great image of a great passenger facility.  I feel fortunate ot have originated/terminated many trips there.....well, I guess the actual point of departure was the SF Ferry Bulding.

The coffee plants were in San Francisco.
