Even With Several Modifications, Her Factory Lines Still Show!
Author: LoggerHogger

By 1949, Shevlin-Hixon's 2-8-2 #5 was sporting a number of additions that were not present when she left the factory back in 1922.  Despite that, she still had the distinctive look of a Baldwin logging Mike.

Most noticeable is the addition of a 1937 Chevy car body to her tender to serve as a doghouse for the head brakeman.  From this perch he can watch the log loads as they make their way on the Great Northern mainline from Chemult, Oregon the 60 miles back to the mill in Bend.  Steam heat has been plumbed to the car body and her seats have been retained to make the ride a comfortable one.

More subtle is the lengthening of the tender itself.  Over 5-feet has been added to the rear of the water cistern to give her the range to make the trip on the GN trackage without the need for water stops that could disrupt the GN trains.

Lying flopped over on the top of the cab are the 2 metal sheets that can be used as sun screens by the crews in the hot afternoon sun that Central Oregon is famous for.  Finally, a steam  pipe has been added off the water delivery pipe extending to the front to supply steam to raise and lower the blades on the snowplow that was used in the winter to keep the line to the company town of Shevlin open.

The result of these modifications was to tailor the locomotive to the needs of the lumber company, but at the same time to leave largely intact the orginal Baldwin design.

Clever-!  Thanks for bringing this story to us-addition of a 1937 Chevy car body to her tender to serve as a doghouse for the head brakeman.   Steam heat has been plumbed to the car body and her seats have been retained to make the ride a comfortable one.

Steam for operating the plow/flanger with steam cylinder doesn’t make sense in bitter cold weather.

How do you keep the steam trapped in a cylinder from condensing & freezing...??

For that purpose, Compressed air would make more sense.....but you’d need a good
condensate removal trap..

I’m just saying...

#5 seems to have very small diameter drivers to be running on the GN mainline for 60 miles!  How long did the trip take her?  Did the log train have to wait in a siding several times on it's run for higher-drivered GN freights to come highballing by?

The pipe going to the front of the locomotive comes off the injector feed line.  You'd get hot water out of that pipe, not steam....
