Looking for great Up Big Boy sound recordings
Author: Krokodil

A German railman who has a great steam sound website asked me for some great Up 4014 sound recordings of the UP big boy on its recent trip, ideally full load, minimal whistling and no highway noises. Sounds impossible but maybe there are some out there, searching through YouTube so far has not given any superb results so far, so what is your favored recording?

I've got video of it climbing up to Moapa, with some pretty good sound. The clip is 6 minutes long so if there's interest I think I'll have to edit so only the last 30-60s is left. Let me know if interested.

By all means, is this west of Moapa. I video taped the Moapa departure, but very little sound.

No, it's climbing up on the east side of Moapa prior to stopping there. It might take me a day or so to get this edited...

I just realised, although the sound of 4014 is good i.e. it's working hard upgrade there's some sound from my camera's shutter repeatedly going off as I also shot some photos.... so it may not be appropriate?

Those camera shutter sounds can be cut out, usually with no detriment to the recording.

Thanks, nice sound, I did not know that there is a grade west towards Moapa.

Yes, a long steady climb, mostly dead straight with a great viewpoint looking north along it, until it disappears into a canyon which contains the Meadow Valley Wash. At the end of the straight in the video the track curves to the left and out of sight for a while. 4014 had gone in the hole there to wait for an eastbound empty coal train, then came thundering up the grade.
