are there are GS-4 recordings from the 40's and 50's execpt 4449 or any gs class?

About fifty-five years ago I purchased a 33-1/3 LP that was recorded on SP 4-8-4 #4460's last run, but I do not remember the title of this vinyl album or who produced it. What I DO remember very well is that darn single-note diesel horn that #4460 carried--and blew--in addition to its steam whistle. Good luck with your search. Be safe.

When does the copyright run out, I wonder if I can post tracks with out getting into legal trouble?

Since Brad Miller has long since passed away, I doubt that there would be any "issues" with such a posting.

The 3 tracks I found of 4460 in 1960 all have the higher SP 6 chime whistle and the air horn.
No Hancock.
Direct from a lovinly used LP, Here is a track From "Highball".  Note Jim Ameche's unique pronunciation of California.

There is an LP called Power and Majesty, but they are all 4449 recordings with narrations to make you think they are other things.

Yeah I came to find that, documentaries put 4449's 1974-1989 Whistle or SP&S 700 Whistle.

I recall 4449 coming east to Mojave from Bakersfield one morning, I believe with a special, and blowing that foghorn it carried which we heard from five miles away.

The whistle sounds similar to another Lima engine....NKP 765, but not quite as squeely as the Berk!

The Farewell to Steam LP that mostly featured onboard recordings of Santa Fe 3759's 1955 fantrip over Cajon Pass also included a few Southern Pacific recordings at the end.  Two of them feature GS's blowing their whistles.  Below is a short, hopefully "fare use" sized clip of the better of the two.

What did you expect?  Any big two-cylinder steam locomotive with a 3-chime Hancock is going to "sound like 4449," and also like UP 844, and also like N&W 611. 

The Farewell to Steam! LP containing this recording was released in 1957.  The jacket notes don't specify the number of the locomotive in the recording, so there's a chance it was the 4449...but if so, it was 4449 in regular service.  The next track on the LP is of the second section of Tr.95 at Santa Barbara the same day, and it also had a GS for power with a 3-chime Hancock.  Even if one of the trains just happened to be powered by the 4449, the other one wasn't. 

The Copyright ran out 26 years after it was produced.  It is all Public domain.  New Copyright laws after 1971 coverr until 76 years after death of owner of copyright material.

Remember the red vinyl "Highball" album my father listened to on our "HiFi" as a kid. Still have them and bought a "record Player" from B&H in New York. May need to disturb the neighborhood this afternoon with some classic vinyl. My musician son says there is a big resurgence of vinyl. Thanks for the suggestion,,, Enjoyed this thread

You nailed it Greg. If that clip was played for me and I was asked to bet on which locomotive it was, I would have put a months salary on NKP 765.
