Do you have a copy of Robert J. Church's book "Southern Pacific Daylight Steam Locomotives"? There are indeed lots of photos out there.

Just my opinion but, I do not believe that styling is correct. The SP generally painted them all black, still with the skirts on (there is a photo of #4449 in all black with skirts as the second engine of a doubleheader, in a Guy Dunscomb book), then back to red, orange & black, then removed the skirts and painted them all black again. I have not seen any prototype photos of a GS class locomotive with a daylight painted tender & cab, but a black skirt-less engine.

There was about a half dozen variations in the half dressed Daylight scheme. Seemed to depend on when it was painted, i.e during the war, after the war, in the 50's, and where it was painted.

My theory is that SP removed GS streamlining when they could, certainly not just at shoppings.  Living on the SP Coast line, I saw many variations of the disappearing GS streamlining process.  It made me think that at leaast some of the removal was done between runs.......is that possible.

I don't know, maybe because I'm seeing 1950 - 1952 of this livery then into the Black livery.
