Was Cindy Sanborn ever involved with C&O #614 Steam?

Norfolk Southern today named Union Pacific executive Cindy Sanborn as its chief operating officer effective Sept 1.  What are the chances of #611 getting out to do the change of management thing or will she not be high enough or not interested?

Looking at the press release, they only thing mentioned is to bring value to the shareholder.  Nothing even about improving value to the customer, much less anything else.  Seems to be what their focus is now...

1) Both, i.e. she isn't high enough and probably doesn't give a crap about steam at all.

2) Not aware that she was ever involved with C&O 614, especially since her father was from the Family Lines anyway.

You see........for anybody to remember much steam as kids today, folks would have to be in their 80's or even 90;s.    Most people just don't care.    We here, don't fall into that category however.

I believe 614 did in fact run on the Family Lines System in Florida in 1981 during when it was pulling the Chessie steam specials. I think this was after the Chessie and SCL merged about a few months earlier.

When we ran the 614 in 1981 pulling the Chessie Safety Express over the entire system promoting grade crossing safety Cindy's late father Dick Sanborn who was then a Sr. VP of the just merged Seaboard System rode with us several days and took a turn on the right hand seat. His then young daughter Cindy accompanied him on several occassions IIRC. 

   Cindy Sanborn has built an outstanding career in railroading and I'm confident will add a great deal to the NS leadership team.

If she is so inclined, it could take years for her to get sufficiently established to help heritage railroading.  Look at Wick Moorman's career.  Once he got to the CEO spot, it took several years just to get to the F-unit stage, and several more before 21st Century Steam blossomed, and four more years before the 611 was revived.

Off topic - I don't think this is very good news for the direction the NS is trending towards. Sanborn will come in first and Mr PSR will be coming in next. Her time at UP was not a good one for the agreement employees or customers with the mixed train plan that she deployed.

Finally, a post with some substance. Be assured that Ms.Sanborn has been brought in to help further slash the OR numbers for the appeasement of the Wall St analysts, not to make friends with the employees and customers or to run steam engines.

Let me just say this; it is high time that these major corporations like these railroads start thinking about their customers.  These so called Wall Street Analysts had better learn one thing:  No Customer Service, No Corporation.  Anyone with common sense who owns a business knows, without customers, you have no business.

A huge recent RR revenue stream moves no Physical Product...

Fiber-optic cable access to transcontinental routing & real estate leases.

A telecom company can lease
land access from only two real-estate entities — to stretch fibre from LA to NY...

The 4 major RR carriers ( east & west) can be linked-up for transcontinental combinations.
Both east/west access and north/south access.

With land freed up ( duplicate main lines ripped-up), there is space for
Thousands of fiber cables — all producing annual/monthly lease revenues.. worth $$ millions..
and that business keeps growing..

It’s the un-reported huge revenue
producers for the RRs, especially the ‘land-grant’ RRs of the West..

BNSF is surely one of the biggest
beneficiaries of the fiber/real-estate
income producers — and Berkshire
Hathaway is raking-in the cash..

There’s no associated labor costs to the RRs, no maintenance, no lawsuits, no freight hauling costs, no passengers, no associated environmental liabilities, ... no expense at-all to the RRs...

AND, the revenue is NOT related to
the vicissitudes of the “market economy”.... the money continuously flows —-independently of the panicky price changes in the stock and bond markets...
The data flows do not change with
fluctuations in market indexes.

To the RRs, its a continually expanding revenue-source for them.... worth $$ millions
of income, on a daily basis.. and growing..

A lot of the fiber is stretched around the world... with virtually every country’s fiber connections crossing
the U. S. of A...

The data stream is immense..
think of simply one business area of immense importance : banking-related transactions.... that’ll give
you a glimpse of how huge the business-scope is. And that’s just one sector of the ‘communications
flood’ of business..

Every stock trade, every credit card transaction, every purchase, every Tweet, every video, etc., generates massive data flows—- and the RRs are raking-in the cash..

Wake-up railfans.... this is the 21st
century —- rip up the rails, fire the employees. bury the Fibre,
sit-back & collect the lease revenues, ad Infinitum.

Such a DEAL!

buy a BUNCH of RR stocks in the
Big Four... that’s what the big banks are doing.)..

( 2nd Related prediction:
Soon the Big RRs will get out of the train-handling business. They will own the tracks, but lease-out the train handling business—- possibly to several “hauling-entities” simultaneously operating the trains over a carriers’ tracks...

All the costs are assumed by the bidders for the access to the rail network.. Dispatching will be contracted, motive power leased,
and maintained at common loco
service buildings —- for the major work and repairs... daily maintenance, track, etc. will be done in the “field”...

‘Liability’ will be with the “operators..”, not the owners of the rights-of-way

The owning-carriers will collect the
‘Tolls’ according to the trains operated, by the bidders ( for the business)..

You have a much more optimistic outlook about Wall Street Analysts than I do.

They do not care about us.  They are harvesting the guts of America just like the aliens in the "Independence Day" movie planned to.  They will just move on like a swarm of locusts.

NS gains an excellent female executive!  This is UP's loss and NS's gain. Cindy will continue to lead the NS toward a sound operational future.

As I said before, if she left because of the state of the UP, I salute her. It's hard to tell how much impact she had at UP
and I'd like not ot gauge her performance on that. CSX seems to have stabilized a bit after she left, so who knows.

I completely agree, John.

I found it interesting that the word "customer" does not appear anywhere in the NS press release. The whole concept of "PSR" is all about increasing value for the shareholders. Customers be damned.

Hey Mike, I'm 77+ and experienced (and remember very clearly) seven years of SP regular service steam  passing my house 24/7.  Sorry,  couldn't resist....lol

Same for me Alan, i.e. 78+ and grew up in New Jersey, on the Central RR of New Jersey (Cranford, NJ) and sure remember lots and LOTS of steam powered passenger and commuter trains, plus the PRR K4s & K4sa locomotives on the New York & Long Branch out of South Amboy, NJ.
