1939 Worlds Fair steam question
Author: haneckow

Does anyone have a good source of information regarding a live steam locomotive displayed by the Southern Pacific duing the 1939-1940 Golden Gate International Exposition?  It was described in an Oregon newspaper article as a fully working 4-4-2 locomotive that was seven feet long.

Probably #1, a 4-2-4, like the plastic model I was given by
a very nice SP PR guy years ago. It even has a radio in it!!

He was the gentleman who told us at a Chamber of Commerce meeting
that the yard wasn't closing while Joe Neal was telling the Mojave
employees it was at the same time!

He also told us that the Lone Pine Branch would not shut down above
Ridgecrest on the day SP published a news release saying it was being abandoned.

Poor guy couldn't catch a break! He left SP soon after which was a shame but understandable.

John Signor's covered the Golden Gate International Exposition on pgs. 163-166 plus pg. 171 of his book, "Southern Pacific's Western Division" but there was no mention of a live steam engine displayed by SP at the exposition.

The SP's exhibit included three operating O-scale model trains (one of which was pulled by a model of the C.P. Huntington).

Also, there was a full-size operating reproduction of a GS-3's driving wheels, connecting rods and valve gear.

Maybe a 1939 issue of the SP Bulletin might have more info. Check with the Calif. State Railroad Museum Library.
