Steam & Excursion > Steam Powered Trains Running Again In Niles CanyonDate: 09/13/20 10:43 Steam Powered Trains Running Again In Niles Canyon Author: FiveChime Skookum #7 will be running this afternoon at 1:30 then again next Saturday at 4 and 7 PM . Also a week from today.
Alameda County is allowing these operations and PLA is following strict Covid guidelines: Face masks are required with social distancing and on-line ticket sales with train cleaning prior to each trip. Limited ticket sales for each train at. NCRY.org. The 7 PM Saturday trains are unique as departure from Sunol is at dusk and eastbound return up the hill from Niles is in darkness which provides the opportunity to hear the rare 2-4-4-2 locomotive working in the still evening air. A little smokey yesterday but that will improve soon. Regards, Jim Evans Date: 09/13/20 13:58 Re: Steam Powered Trains Running Again In Niles Canyon Author: MojaveBill A scene from days gone by...

I too noticed when I was there to ride the first run on Saturday. Many of the residents up Kilkare(sp?) Rd are scared that they will become trapped by fire and are selling. A few weeks ago the SCU complex fire got within 6 miles and the for sale signs at least doubled. The end of the road is deep in the canyon with no easy way to climb out if one were in need of escape. Ranger Pipeline put in new water lines and hydrants for the SF water district in Sunol about 4 years ago but that may only be good for a structure fire, not a fast moving brush and vegitation fire. Beautiful area but narrow, twisty, and only one way in or out. Considered moving there but the commute traffic became so bad it wasn't worth while anymore. |
