D&RGW inside Alamosa Shop 6/23/1960

Hope all enjoy some rare inside the shop views.  Have been in shop twice and never saw anyone or if they saw me never said a word.  3 more to follow.

At this time 6/23/1960 the two wrecked locomotives were on the tail of the Cumbres wye track.  What happened to those photos is a mystery.

I love Alamosa Backshop pics.  499 is getter her last shopping at this time.  Once back in service, she would run out her flue time and be retired in 1965.  493, on the other hand, would get one more run-through of the shop and still be active until the end of narrow gauge operations in 1968.

498 and 497 were hauled in from Cumbres sometime in the summber of 1960.  The damage to them was mostly superficial, although the tenders were a total loss.  Recently retired 490 gave its tender to 497.  While another out of service K-37 gave its tender to 498.  From here on there was as always a K-37 sitting around without a tender.

"On just the day I was there two years later on June 18, 1962 driving the Plymouth Woody station wagon they moved the wrecked engine that had been at Cumbres and advanced it on the transfer table and put it in the shop for rebuilding.  Thank Earl for the added information date.  Another big shipment for Farmington which is reason for a template "feeler" car.

Plywoody, agreed would like to see the whole roll, love the shots that everyone ignored. Still haven't seen any decent shots
of the refinery when it was in business, also curious if there ever was a siding across the highway in Antonito to the lumber mill.

Some how we learned there were some Cumbres turns working out of Chama to we hightailed it to the overlook of Coxo and waited and not too long for black smoke of the second turn.  This was my first revenue freight I saw on the narrow gauge but I had ridden the Silverton Train two years earlier with the whole family.  These were the coaling facilities at the time 6-18-1962 at Alamosa and Antonito.  Can anyone give me the names of the Cumbres turn crew on June 23, 1962?  They were amazingly friendly and I will show how later.

I discovered a big mistake after I got these photo back from Kodak.  This was Kodachrome but I had a 1A filter on lens that increased contrast.  But over 7000 feet elevation the contrast is so great the filter almost ruined my photos. I doubt that photo shop can fix the black shadows.

Great photos, thank you for posting. Timely for me, as today my younger brother and I rode the last run of the year on the Cumbres and Toltec out of Antonito. The aspens were either barren trees with the leaves blown off, or a blaze of “Aspen Gold”. Thanks again for the pics.
