17 cars is a good pull for 1522.
Thanks for sharing. I am sure Don has stories from that trip.

That was either a lot of sand or a lot of oil, or both.

#1522 was always known as a great machine, with loud "stack talk"

A St. Louis Chapter NRHS excursion.  The second excursion trip I worked and my first as a car host.  The weather was beautiful.  I believe we loaded supplies and the crew boarded on the south side of Luther Yard north of downtown St. Louis.  Passengers were boarded at Ferguson.

Thanks for posting the memory!

It became somewhat of a nightmare trip.  Wasn't too bad going to Moberly.  All the way back we fought terrible water problems. One old guy told me we should have taken water there because they can't even make coffee from it
Foaming water beyond belief.  As bad as Texas water.  We fired the engine and Bobby Saxtan ran.  If you could see water in the glass, the engine would foam and the whistle strangled.  We pulled into the GM plant yard in Wentzville to blow out a glass or two of water, load it up with anti-foam and it was still really bad.  I think poor Bobby was ready to pull his hair out and so were we.  I found out later that we had some sort of crap in the tank car we used for an aux water car on top of everything else. We made it back, very late and worn out.
Trip from hell.  Or at least half a trip from hell.

Don - Did we switch out the 1522 for a diesel at Wentzville?  I don't remember if it was a one-day or two-day trip. Might be getting it confused with a 611 trip. Memory gets foggy...

At least you got back without dying, that's a sucky return trip with that kind of water!
