Steam & Excursion > Arrival Of New Steam Power Meant It Was Time To Inspect It!

It's 1927 at Onalaska, Washington and the Newaukum Valley Railroad has just taken delivery of it's newest piece of steam motive power.  This big ALCO 2-8-2 has just arrived in the yards and the Newaukum Valley shop crews are anxious to give her an inspection.

This locomotive was built in January, 1920 for the Hetch-Hetchy Railroad out of Groveland, California.  She was the #4 on that line and spent 3 years there hauling trains to construct the O'Shaunesey Dam for the City of San Francisco who owned the railroad.  When the dam was completed in 1923 she was stored in Groveland while the City decided what to do with the railroad.  By 1927, it was determined that #4 was surplus and she was sold to the Newaukum Valley RR.

Her tender still shows the "Hetch" portion of the name of her prior owner.  Soon she will be run through the Onalaska shop and given a new paint job and lettering for her new owner.  She would serve the Newakum Valley well for many years.  In the 1940's she would be sold again, this time to the Santa Maria Valley RR in Santa Maria, California.

Upon her final retirement by the SMV she was donated to Traveltown in Los Angelas where she still is today.

Spent a lot of time at Travel Town as a kid a remember this  engine. Living in Glendale with Alan Miller
4 houses up from my house and Glendale Tower, & Station just up the street..
Don't remember telling you the SP tracks were across the street from us, and we always knew
when my Dad was going by as he would blow the whistle both steam and diesel..

"They look,pretty thin, to me!"
