Greyhounds at Cheyenne 1949 - Ralph Hallock
Author: Conch

Sometime during the winter months, Ralph Hallock visited Cheyenne and caught this view at the depot.  On the left is 4-8-4 809 leading #1 The Los Angeles Limited while on the next track over is 4-8-4 839 and another unidentified 800 on the head end of #27, The San Francisco Overland. Not the sharpest view ever but there's no going back for a redo.

Wonderful image! Color images of the 800s in grey are not particularly plentiful. But I don't think I've ever seen an image like this one, with three of them in regular service, together side-by-side, and on scheduled, named passenger trains. Much less spotted at the depot in Cheyenne, straining at their leashes and ready to attack Sherman Hill. Greyhounds indeed! (And they sure ain't buses!) Remarkable...and probably quite rare.

Thanks much for posting a memorable image for us to enjoy.

This photo includes the Cheyenne Freight House and the old Riner Viaduct besides the depot.

Did the 800s not receive the wind wings all at the same time or were they remover for some reason? I see the later series has them but the older ones don't.

All of the Alco Northerns came without the wings. They are a UP shop mod Added.

With the dwell time in the station, freights used other tracks back then in Chian more i imagine.  never saw a pic of so many greyhounds at once, Someday be nice to get the 4 UP northerns together for something like this.

My high school team mascot was the "Greyhounds". I had always associated the name with that bus company, and that did not make this SP brat happy at all.  To think of those FEFs as "my" Greyhounds could work for me, even if they are UP machines.

Hello,

In those days, the "passenger mains" (later known as "the P mains) were the tracks that ran via the depot.  At Tower A (west end of Cheyenne, near the C&S overpass) the two "Freight Mains" diverted to the south into the yard.  The Freight Mains  rejoined the passenger tracks at Cheyenne's "East End", about a mile east of the depot.  All freight trains operated via the Freight Mains & the freight yard at the time of the photo.

Take care,

Mark

The poster found what is no doubt the correct date --
13 April 1947, when 1 and 27 would be side by side.
