A walk through the house tracks of any roundhouse during the steam era would not only show one the steam motive power being readied for their next run, but also the tools that were needed to keep them in top operating condition.

In this view just a handful of the many tools that were used on steam locomotives are present at this Southern Pacific roundhouse in the early 1950's.  In the adjoining stalls we see SP #4454 and #4444 waiting their next call to duty.  The shop crews have made sure that these necessary tools are at the ready just a few steps away so that any last minute adjustments can be made to get them on their was with no delay to the railroads operating schedule.
