Every now and then I find a resting, hot steam locomotive at night.

Nice night shots!!

It's hot inside the boiler, but sure not on the outside!  Rowdy Pierce is thawing pipes on the Hillcrest Lumber Company Climax #10 at about 11 PM on Friday, 12/19/2008.  With the temperature at 19°, we had put fires back in #10 and Hammond Lumber Company 2-8-2T #17 around 10 PM because there wouldn't be enough steam left the following morning to fire them up without shop air, which just doesn't work well at these temperatures.  You can see some steam escaping near the front of the locomotive.

The temperature continued to drop and by dawn on Saturday it stood at a chilly 8°.  The assigned engineer on #10 for the day, the late SP&S 700 hogger Greg Kamholz, found (while doing his brake test before leaving the enginehouse to go to the train) that only one of the three trucks had any effective braking effort due to the weather conditions.  It took more applied heat and many applications/releases of the independent brake while carefully moving on the enginehouse track before he dared tip over the hill to get the train in the yard.

I've also had the pleasure of working #25, that Rick presented above, at night.
