Author: LoggerHogger While we have preserved today some of the largest and most impressive examples of steam motive power from this country's mainline railroads, there are also some of the more humble steam engines that survived to operate well past the age of steam. We see one such example here.
Little Northern Pacific 0-6-0 #1070, seen her in service in Olympia, Washington would likely have followed her sister L-9 0-6-0's to the scrap yard in the late 1950's but for the fact that she had been purchased in 1958 by the Simpson Timber Co. to serve as the switcher for their mill at McCleary, Washington. That job lasted into 1959 during which time she had caught the attention of the newly formed Puget Sound Railway Historical Association who acquired her for their new museum in Snoqualmie, Washington. She was stored at the museum until 1972 when she was shipped to the new Lake Whatcom Ry out of Wickersham, Washington. She operated there until the 1990's when she was in need of both a boiler and running gear rebuild that has yet to take place. We are lucky that not only the big and powerful locomotives were saved from the scrap yard.
