Originally built in 1909 as the second to the last in the order of Southern Pacific MC-1 Class Cab-Forwards, #4015 is still hard at work in 1938 when she was caught at the ready at the Dunsmuir, California.  

Her class was changed to MC-2 and finally to AC-1 by SP.  When built she was seen as a big 2-8-8-2 and was the best the SP had.  In later years there would be many refinements to the Cab-Forwards which included them growing to 4-8-8-2's and finally reaching the last class as AC-12's.

#4015 has another 10 years ahead of her before she will be retired in 1948.  She still strikes an imposing image at the time of this photo.

What is the large box on the pilot beam for?  I see a  "brake wheel" sticking out of the side. [I know it's not for brakes but best way to discribe it]

Bob Church in his book Cab Forward writes that these boxes contained fire hoses, adding 
in a caption: "Most AC-6's were soon equipped with snow pilot and fire hoses in box
below headlight". Obviously the fire hoses could be found on other than AC-6's, as well.

Makes sense since the Cab Forwards were designed to run through those long, long snow sheds and tunnels.
Both of which like to burn, a lot!

I would imagine the wheel on the side of the box is not a brake wheel but is used to wind up the hose reel that is inside the box.
