Author: LoggerHogger The time is May, 1941 and a group of railfans have stopped in to visit the shops of the West Side Lumber Co. at Tuolumne, California. Here they see the work that has been done all winter long by West Side CMO Ed Sullivan and his shop crews on the Shays that will have to spend all summer and into the fall bringing in the log trains that will keep the mill running year round.
The fresh paint on the flanks of WSL Shay #8 shows that she has been thoroughly shopped and is read for a the logging season ahead. Once the last of the winter snows have been cleared in the high country, she and her sister Shays will head back to the woods for another year of logging. Martin Edited 1 time(s). Author: sixbit The #8 when first delivered didn't have sufficient weight on the right side of her frame and would derail because of that on curves. A large weight was added to the right front to balance her and after that she ran fine and stayed on the rails (for the most part).

There was a large weight put on her engineer side running board, just until Lima could send out a man to correct the bolster issue. Once that was fixed the weight was removed for the rest of her career.
