1522 With Freight On Rolla Hil
Author: MaryMcPherson

Okay, Don.  You ASKED for it.

As mentioned in A PREVIOUS THREAD, 1522 had to work her butt off with a freight train on Rolla Hill on April 29, 2001.

While most chasers tend to do a lot more leap-frogging of the train to get a quantity of locations, I had only a few "must-get" locations.  Rolla Hill obviously had to be one of them.  On the westbound trip, I got a recording on the east side of the hill a bit west of the Rolla exit off the interstate.  While the train headed off to Newburg and the wye at Bundy Junction, I got situated for the eastbound assault.

Here is the recording I made on the hill that day.

Video isn't playing properly.  Just as it is getting good, it says it stopped loading.   Wonder if problem is on TO or what.
It sounds like I remember it, like pulling a 24 car pass train.

This is the equipment used to make this series of recordings.  By the way, Brad Miller was one of my early inspirations.

It's not on the T.O. end; I tested it here after I uploaded.

We FINALLY have a good DSL connection here.  It took them 5 1/2 years to realize they never wired the system properly!

Well done Mary.  Yes, those early Brad Miller LPs got me started in audio as well. The first one my dad brought home was Hear That Whistle Blow(with McCloud RR steam).  Little did I know that 50 + years later I would see and ride McCloud 25 in person.
There are many far off sounds that you hear if you turn it on early enough and be patient after the train passes.
Keep up the good work.

I downloaded it and it plays just fine.
We got back home late that night.  It was a rough trip and we stopped in the middle of the 4th St crossing in Pacific about 11PM and a fuel truck met us and gave us a couple hundred gallons of diesel.
We left the train on the siding at W Valley Park and boogied home.  Never did figure out what made that so hard to pull.  She did fine on the BNSF  EAS shortly after the breakin run.  Maybe it was the small wheels on the auto racks?

Well, those racks WERE loaded.  We always wondered if they were able to charge a premium for vehicles that had been pulled behind steam!

You remember the tonnage on that train Don, and what was the 1522 rated for on that grade?

To my ears, there just isn't better sounding whistle anywhere than a flat top Frisco three chime.
