Author: LoggerHogger The desert climate of the Owens Valley in Eastern California was certainly known for it extremes in heat and cold. However, another of it's claim to fame for steam crews during the days that the Slim Princess ran was the periodic dust storms that would kick up. We see just such an event in 1954 while Southern Pacific #9 tries to outrun a dust storm with her short train bound for Keeler.

Author: PHall If you listen to the folks who live in the Owens Valley, they didn't have the dust storms before the City of Los Angeles stole "their" water when they built the Los Angeles Aqueduct.

up land south of there. Worst dust storms I have ever seen, including here in the desert. Dust was killing my Dad who lived to a ripe old age out here away from all the crud in the San Joaquin Valley which is still a mess. And I would be racing that dust storm as fast as they little engine could go.
As for dust storms in Bakersfield, I remember my Dad telling us stories about them when we would visit my grandparents. Never saw one there. But did get caught in a giant one at the Phoenix airport which delayed my flight home! Will never forget watching it come in and the sitting on the taxiway hours. It felt especially long since it was the last leg of my flight home after being out of the country for two years. I had a room overlooking the SP freight yard thanks to a classmate that offered to switch rooms with me and loaned out his binoculars! I also remember seeing a rainbow following a rain that reportedly was rare for El Paso.
