Author: LoggerHogger There are times that railfans did not have time to park their cars in such a way as to keep them out of the photos they were taking of a passing steam train. That may be the case here in this fine photo by Gordon Glattenberg of Southwest Lumber Mills 2-8-0 #2 and her train near Flagstaff, Arizona. Even if Gordon had not recorded the date as he did of June 24, 1958, we could have guessed the year by the sight of Gordons nearly new, 1958 Chevy in the background.

Author: asheldrake great photo and I like including the car.....the car however is not my favorite,,,58 was only surpassed by 59 for being less than pleasing....my favorite is 57, then 56.....my folks had one of the 59 wingers...it did NOT fly. In 1959 they purchased a used Baldwin S-12. It came from the Rock Island through a dealer. It was built in 1953 and one wonders why the Rock was selling a diesel that was only six years old. The diesel replaced 2-6-6-2 #12. Anyway, Southwest found the diesel (#758) rather hard on the track, and it spent quite a bit of time on the ties. As a result, #2 was used quite a bit, especially when the roadbed got soft with spring thaw. The very last log train Southwest Forest Industries ran in March, 1966 was pulled by the #2.
