Steam Motive Power In The Snow Can Produce Some Amazing Images!
Author: LoggerHogger

Winter still held its grip on Southern Pacific's Cascade Line in 1950 when this wonderful photo of SP #5034 was captured on film.  This big 4-10-2 has her train well under control in this winter wonderland.

I doubt there would be much, as it looks to be drifting downgrade.
Those are some really nice engines though.  We have some film footage of one on a fantrip in the late steam era.  Really nice looking machines.

The grade here is 1.7% descending eastward (on 1987 track charts) and the photographer has captured
the crew of the 5034 'mid-tackle' on "The Hill" as you referred to in a previous post.

I suppose others may challenge me when I say the engineer of 5034 is really earning his pay in this photo. Any hoghead
can pull a train uphill; it takes an engineer to safely bring a train downhill.

Great photo, Martin!

The BNSF decided to put crews on a bus to move them from Barstow to Needles back in 2003. Think it lasted a week. One guy beat a bum up who wouldn't stay out of his bag. But for me, my one and only trip was next to a little guy of old age. He questioned the numerous guys getting on and I filled him in. Turns out he used to fire the Big Decks up north. Then he got a surprise when I asked him about what engines he fired. How did a kid know what a 4-10-2 was? It was a great bus ride. His face lit up and He talked the whole way to Needles. Wish I had gotten his name. He loved those engines.
