As the 1930's came to a close, many of the small narrow gauge shortlines had either already closed or were on their last legs.  One of those line struggling to stay alive in the Great Depression was the Eureka-Nevada Ry that ran out of Palisades, Nevada.

Sandwiched between the Western Pacific and the Southern Pacific at Palisades, the E-N was the successor to the old Eureka & Palisades Ry.  In this 1936 photo we see E-N #10 shoving a cut of gondola cars up the ramp on the E-N/WP ore transfer track at Palisades.

Palisades would have been a most wonderful place to visit for any railfan during these last years of its operation.

What a neat shot.  Looks like a WP car in the background.

Something I always wondered: did the E-N do any transloading of freight with the Western Pacific?  Of course the did with the SP and I have seen that well documented, but have not come across any specific mentions with the WP.

I’m pretty sure that was an ore reload, not for coal. And to answer the raised question, the E&P/EN did have a spur that crossed the river and terminated at the WP freight depot a bit upstream from the townsite.

After one of its several sales, bankruptcies and foreclosures, the name of the railroad was changed from the Eureka & Palisade RR to the Eureka Nevada RR about 1912.
