Steam crew Legend Art Lockman passed away
Author: Bob3985

I received word this morning that a long time friend and steam crew mechanical foreman, Art Lockman, passed away.
He was the foreman that we named the baggage/tool car after.
My sympathies go out to his family and friends. I believe he was in his early 90's.
I'll know more when the obit is printed.
His son, Bobby also a former steam crew member, called me this morning to be a pall bearer.
This weekend I will run my funeral car and Art Lockman tool car in HO at our club layout in his honor.

So sorry to learn this, Bob.  Art was truly as great guy and an unbelievable wealth of knowledge on UP steam power. I know I sure learned a LOT from him. Plus, Art was an avid golfer, and really enjoyed retirement. Please give my condolences to Bobby, and the rest of his family.

Thanks Jack.
Art was also an avid Yankees fan but every spring season he would go watch the Cubs play in Mesa Arizona.

Art was a good friend to me and my wife Pat.

One event stands out from the trip back to Omaha from the Louisiana Worlds Fair in 1985.  We were tied up for the night in Houston at the Westfield auto center.    Pat had flown down from Omaha to join me.  After dinner we walked up to the 8444 to find Art in the cab.  We ended spending a long evening with him listening to his stories.  Eventually I started nervously glancing over toward the water glass behind him.  He keeping jawing, ignoring me.  Finally without a word he reached over and turned a valve.  Whew!   It was priceless.

I'll never forget one private moment with him in the roundhouse at Cheyenne.  We were talking and looking out the window toward the passenger depot.  He turned to me and said, "You know John, it was just yesterday when I crossed those tracks on my first day on the job..."

Well done Art.

Yes, Art was known to many as Mr. Steam.
He was a very unique individual in the mechanical department.
He loved his time on the steam crew.
Tonight I will go thru my slides and see if I can find my photos of him to scan and post.
He will be very missed. Today at the barber shop as I was getting a haircut as I am supposed to be a pawl bearer We
talked about Art as he used to get his hair cut there as well. Great stories.
One year at our UPHS convention in Cheyenne he was a guest on our "Old Farts" panel. He got to describing the Alco diesels and started making the sounds of starting one up.
Every on laughed at his accurate rendition.
His memory will live on forever in our hearts who knew him so well.

Sorry for your loss Bob, would've been cool to meet him when I met you, Lynn, his wife, and Steve Lee almost 21 years ago!

Bob and the Lockman family:  Sorry to hear this, he was a great guy who gave so much to the Union Pacific and the Steam Program.  Need to sound the whistle long and loud in his honor.
