SP 4449 Eastbound Fallbridge Sub
Author: Willsburg765

The other night, my wife was going through her phone to clear out files and asked me if I wanted a video she found.  The video, attached here, is from four years ago, June 24, 2017.  SP 4449 is heading east at MP 15.50 on the BNSF Fallbridge Sub (former Spokane Portland and Seattle Railway) east of Vancouver, Washington.  At the time I was shooting stills and I posted one on Trainorders then.  I had no idea my wife had this on her phone for the past four years.  I thought it was great to again see this beautiful locomotive operating at track speed on a mainline route.  It was also fun to see the excited fans trying to get set up in time to get their shots.  This location is in a neighborhood south of Washington State Hwy 14, so there was no caravan of chasers nearby.

Thank you to my wife, Danette, for the nice surprise.

I hope you all enjoy this too.

Joe

She did good!!!   Shame that assclown insisted on parking right in front of her.  No manners.

That boorish behavior ( arriving late, & parking right in front of an posted photog)
is so typical of too many train chasers...

That intentional behavior been around for at least 60-years, that I've witnessed....
We've all been on photo lines where some fool who plants his assets
right in front of the whole line....

Whack 'em in the shins..., or yank a leg on the tripod...

Something similar happened to me a few years back.  I was all set up and a guy comes bailing out of
his car and runs down to my spot and spoils my shot and says, "Pardon me I just want to get a quick
shot."  I responded that he was in the way and he didn't move so I said that I was giving up on the shot
but I guaranteed that he wouldn't get ANY shot.  He looked puzzled and I said that as the train
approached I would stand in front of his camer and block all shots.  He got the message and
moved.

Your wife got an excellent video in spite of the clown.  And boy was 4449 moving!

Thanks so much for this video.  A friend and I were in the "Silver Solarium" at the end of the train.  It was, of course, the Cascades Daylight excursion to Bend and back and was a fantastic ride despite the heat.  I have a lot of stills but no videos that I took.  Have seen other videos but this was great.

Agreed!  Also kept the video going for the far off "going away" whistle.  Thank You.

While riding the dome of the Silver Solarium, several of the curved-glass dome
winows were mounted in rubber mounting media --- fitting in the steel window frames.

At the lower corners the curved rubber had curled and gapped open .... letting
water build-up between the curved panes...several inches deep...sloshing
back-and-forth.

Several windows  were affected...so some us dubbed the car: the "Silver Aquarium"...
lost of laughs ...
Its still a FINE car...

Later, there had been a 'seat squeeze' ( from other cars) and long-time friend
Laurie McCormack had sought me out...all the way to the rear car...

Meeting with Laurie was fun as we both caught-up... over the decades since Conneaut..
Later, I surrendered my, purchased, dome seat ( to accommodate some repositioned passengers)
for a lounge seat in the loco crew car...up next to 4449...and my new friends,
as well as the McCormacks...

Pretty sure I recognize the offender. Couldn't find a 2017 Bend trip video on his YouTube channel. Ironically, he has one titled "4449 Hillsboro, ND A**hole ruins shot" and another that seems to poke fun at a very excited kid watching it pass near Havre, MT.

Nice, in spite of the idiot that walked into your scene. Also, has anyone ever thought to hold the cell-phone sideways, instead of vertical?

Man that was a great video, fans driving on chasing her was just as bad at times, never gonna forget my dad moving a few feet back in 84 when she approached Fleta, and everybody ran that stop sign on Dawn Road and Sierra Highway just to get ahead of her, forgot how long it took for us to finally get back onto the road to lead the chase all the way to Roasmond!

Ther's always a bad behavior quotient to steam trips.  Those dopes never pony up to buy a ticket or contribute to the cause.  The only concern is getting "their shot."  Dickheads to be sure.

When 4449 and SP&S 700 double-headed to Wishram in 2005, the chasing melee was intense enough that a lot of them blew through Bingen, WA(25 mph speed limit) at 40+, allegedly with a sheriff's deputy with lights on leading.

I think it was more like he knew he could only stop one and the rest would get away so at least he could sort of warn innocent bystanders, but, maybe he was a foamer!

We had a situation once, I think on a 4501 trip, where we were set up all by ourselves at a good location when some jackwagon pulled up, got out a tripod and video rig and announced to all to "Stay quiet, I'm shooting video".  I couldn't let the challenge go unanswered.  We were shooting stills and when the train got close enough for him to start filming I started yelling WOW, LOOK AT THAT MOFO, SHE'S EFFING MOVING ALONG, and other colorful phrases (I didn't hold back) that I can't put on a family web site.
Another time, Joe Collias and I were chasing 4501 east from St. Louis and found a beautiful spot at a crossing in Princeton, IN.  Nobody around, here comes the train and I shot her right alongside the depot and I heard this uproar next to me.   Joe was set up and at just the right moment, some old guy in bib overalls wandered out of the barber shop and right in front of Joe.   I heard about this halfway back home.
I've heard of people getting nailed with pieces of ballast for walking out in front of a photo line.
There will never be a shortage of buttholes.
