Many People's Work Day Began And Ended With This Steam Power!
Author: LoggerHogger

The daily commute trains that once graced the Southern Pacific depot at 3rd & Townsend in San Francisco, California were something that thousands of workers in that City relied upon each work day.  These trains arrived on time and departed on time to make sure that those commuters got to work and home again according to the schedule.

The power for many of these trains were the SP 4-8-2's and 4-8-4's seen here on this sunny afternoon.  Lined up here from left to right we see SP #4402, #4370 and #4405.  They are all fueled and watered and ready for the trip south.  Just another day in the age of steam.

4-8-2's and 4-8-4's on Commutes was a late in the steam era thing. During the 30's and WWII this was the land of 4-6-2's.
The big power came here only after they were taken off mainline passenger services.
