Steam & Excursion > UP Steam special at Portola 1991

A very short clip of UP 844 and 3985 on display at Portola CA. The westbound train was on its way to Railfair 1991 at Sacramento in May.

The Feather River Rail Society was operating a diesel at the museum and I think it was largely ignored by those enamored by the sight of two big locomotives.

The Portola stop was seared in my memory because we had a lot of corporate people aboard who were hosting a party in the dome car for VIP guests.  It turned out that the dome was stopped right next to two wrecked auto racks.   You couldn't miss them.  The corporate ladies were running back and forth looking for operating people to kill.  I took refuge in a business car at the head of the train.

Years later I bumped into the guy in Council Bluffs who was the superintendent at the time in Portola.  I asked him if he remembered the flap and he shuttered.  I think his answer was something like "Jeezus...I don't even want to think about it."

I have short video clips of those wrecked autoracks.

Also, my father and I made it into the last passenger car. We must have been invited inside as we were far from the gung ho types who would climb on equipment.

Oh man, it's stuff like that you wish you could forget but never can!

I flew out to Salt Lake City and joined up with that trip.  Gave them a reception as they were coming into town that I can't tell here, helped wash equipment and did a good bit of firing from there to Cheyenne.  Three others from the SLSTA were along.  Fun trip.
