Just One Look At This Power, You Know You Are In Helper Country!
Author: LoggerHogger

The Southern Pacific 2-10-2 Class steam locomotives lived up to their names in districts like Siskiyou Summit in Southern Oregon.  These huge rod locomotives were put to ample use as helpers in these areas with good reason.

Here we see SP #3688 paused at Siskiyou Summit in September, 1947.  She presents an imposing image!

Also known as "decks".  There was a trainman on the SP in San Luis Obispo (SLO) also called Deck, but I do not know if he got his name from these engines.

Santa Fe had their big 2-10-2's too. And used them in pretty much the same way too.

It's an interesting comparison between the 3688 above and the photo of 3674, taken the same day and almost the same location, that Martin posted on 0703/21.  3674 still has the boiler tube pilot versus stamped sheet pilot, and the air piping is different.

Interesting train board number for a helper.  I wonder if the fireman missed something or if the helper just was added to the train?

Did they put the proper train number identification on mid-train and rear end helpers?  I know they did so on head end helpers.

No. Thus, it being a light engine move from the engine servicing terminal to the location on the main track, where it joins the mid-train as a helper, the indicators show "X". When the engine returns light, back down the grade, returning to the engine terminal, it is still "X".

I know they did so on head end helpers.

Correct.

If this is the case then X3688 is the train number based on the swing helpers locomotive number? I base that it is the locomotive's number based off of the number displayed in the headlight. I think the helper moved lite under its own power and may have just been added to the train perhaps?

Yes. Unless you mean the "train number" of the freight train being helped, and that train number would be displayed in the indicators of the road locomotive, on the head end.

Right, i.e. the number under the cab and the number on the front number plate & headlight.

The other option is a special instruction allowing the swing helper number to remain displayed in this situation. I do not know of any. I hate it when a photo raises more questions than answers.
