WT. Carter Brothers Lumber Shay moving to Michigan
Author: neildahl

WT. Carter Brothers #2 Shay is on it's way by now to a Michigan  Museum. Stephen F Austin College is allowing it to be moved to Michigan where it will receive a cosmetic restoration and be displayed in an enclosed building. The unedited video also includes the Angelina CTY LBR log car. As well as the Nacogdoches Station, and Santa Fe caboose.Built by the Lima Locomotive and Machine Works in October of 1907 for the Bering, Kiam, and Southern Railroad in Bering, Texas. Soon after it was acquired by the W.T. Carter Brothers lumber company. The two truck, three cylinder shay operated at 180psi with 29 1/2 " drivers. The tender held 2 chords of wood and 2000 gal. of water. At some later date it was converted to coal. It weighs 68,900, with 16,900 tractive effort. As of the late 20's, the locomotive with it's 18.9 max speed was stored at the company shops in Camden, Texas. After many years of neglect, in May of 1970, the engine was donated to the Steven F. Austin State University and parked near their Forestry building. Per Dean Hans William, the Harbor Springs, Michigan Historical society, in the home town of Ephraim Shay, offered to move and restore cosmetically the engine with the engine set inside a museum building. Dean Williams further intimated that the bell currently on the engine is not original. The bell was used as the dinner bell at the universities forest camp. The locomotive is set to leave Texas permanently on October 6th, 2021.

The Shay left on October 6, on schedule.  The log car is going to the Southern Forest Heritage Museum in Long Leaf, LA in a few weeks.

Why di they cut the drive shaft instead of just unbolting it?

The shay has been setting in the same spot for 50 years and out of service for at least 30 more.   The truck that they moved it on required them to remove the rear truck.  My guess is that they did not want to try and unbolt the U joints on site, where they might damage something. Cutting through the drive shaft, and removing one end from the slip joint allowed the removal of the rear truck.    I was not there, so I am only guessing, but it appears that this is what happened.
