AFT Confidential 91- The Trip Home, Day 3
I came into Chicago on The Broadway Limited, and departed on the Southwest Limited. In the break between I took a brisk walk up to Lake Michigan and back.

I never liked the Southwest Limited name. Not so much the lack of the “Chief”, as: didn't the NYC have a Southwestern Limited?
Too close.



Photo 1. The Broadway takes on a bit of water in Toledo. I imagine it's being boiled away quickly on this cold January morning!

Photo 4. Blue, black, green, tuscan, no matter the color- I've always admired the Pennsy N5c with the porthole windows. A classic icon cabin car.
Photo 5. The electric line caught my curiosity so I risked another eyeball freezing shot. Is that the South Shore?
Photo 6. I know this is!

Photo 7. The Loop. Ah, the 70's- a Vega and a Pinto in the same frame. And I think that's a very early Subie too..

Great group of photos, that CTA train on the Loop looks likes the end is almost overhanging the elevated structure.

For the South Shore (multiple train) photo, if taken from your Amtrak train - it looks the tracks just south of Soldier Field.
If you accessed this spot on foot, appears closer to the Field Museum looking south with the IC boxcars stored in what was once the leads to Central Station in the distance to the left.

No, the South Shore depot view was raked on foot in downtown Chicago.

From the Randolph Street bridge looking south to be precise. All of this is now under Millennium Park.

It is the South Shore. Looks like it might be New Carlisle, IN.

The Broadway must have been detouring because Toledo was not a regular stop on its route.  Maybe there was a derailment. Even in severe snowy/cold weather, the Broadway maintained its ex-PRR routing west of Pittsburgh during the Conrail era until 1990.

The "Southwest Limited" was originally a MILW train from Chicago-Kansas City.
