Here are a few photos of the Lanaina Railroad on Maui from March 1986.  Hopefully the engines at least will find a new home.

I wonder if the museum group on Oahu is interested in it? $150k might be pretty steep for them. But two operable steamers, a diesel critter, display engine, some rolling stock, track material, and other equipment might be worth it for them. Maybe they could swing some kind of deal by scrapping everything they don't really need just to move what they'd keep over to Oahu. Maybe if they're a nonprofit, they could persuade the Navy to help move it? Do they have any SeaBees at Pearl?

HRS is fighting the same battle that sank the LK&S, building encroachment. Hall's comment was right, I'd forgotten 
that HRS is 3 foot as well.

Nice captures, Alan.  I was always "too busy" to shoot that line during many trips to the Islands.

Back in March, 1993 we had a one week stay in Hawaii and took a few days to chase the Lahaina RR operation, rode the train as well.  Just about the time development started around the north end of the line, with golf carts and condos...

I guess they needed to show a bi-lingual (Japanese?)  emergency stop for the turntable.

Seems the golf course had more visitors than the train that day   At least the crossing was well posted.   Second photo of a SB train  just north of the golf course crossing. 

Third photo shows there were sugar cane fields nearby at one time.

I was looking at their route on Google maps. Their website says they run as far west as Kahe point, but
there appears to be a good three miles of beach side track still in place past that. If it were my operation and things like local opposition and obstacles weren't a thing, I'd sell the current shop and build a new one near barber's point harbor. Give up the boring track through the new developments and empty space and run further down the beach.

those nice trestles,  maybe  insurance got to be too high?

Leaving Perris Ca tonight on our trip back to the South Bay Torrance Ca. we got to talking about a good fit who could buy and transport the railroad and equipment to a new home and right away I thought of Disney Land in Calif. this train set would fit right in to the existing Railroad and gig Disney back up power and train car.  Crazy Idea right!

Those photos from the past are great.  I rode the line in 1983 when I was 12 and I remember much of the line was surrounded by cane fields and the narrative was geared towards sugar cane.  In looking at Google it looks like they don't grow sugar cane anymore and much of the route has been encroached upon by development.

some very wealthy people.

No, as I mentioned in an earlier thread.  The LK&P's demise is simply because they did not own their right of way.  I was leased for 50 years starting in 1969.  Now the land owners want to see condos on the land.  The last pic above shows the area in contention.  This was the last piece of property the RR ran through that grew sugar cane.  It has been sold to developers.

End of story..... sadly.

I wish I had been able to swing a visit when I was on Maui in 2002. Bummer I missed it, looks like it was a neat little operation.
