Albany & Eastern ran a couple Steam Experience excursions today, from Lebanon out east towards Sweet Home with Porky, Santa Maria Valley #205.  How about a rods-down side view to start, sitting at the depot in Lebanon?

Because it is a Baldwin, and part of an inside joke between many of the early crew members on SP4449.

That trip all the way to Sweet Home looks pretty interesting, if they're using the wye that's some 
seldom used looking track. Add it to the bucket list!

No, there isn't.  I don't know how many years ago it was torn out.  From when I worked there in the '60s and '70s, I recall that one of the main line wye switches was the old tall style spring switch.

They ran to the Georgia Pacific mill not Sweet Home. At the mill 205 ran around the train and went back to Lebanon tender first.

Thanks for the Sweet Home update, the Google Map looked like the wye still existed though unused.

Did trains carry those, "back in the day"?

The Sweet Home PD, McDonalds and BiMart occupy the area that the wye was located.

As Lou wrote, the wye area is totally occupied nowadays by Bi-Mart, McDonald's, and the police station.  Here's three successive views of approaching the Sweet Home depot from the main line on the Foster-side leg of the wye.  Looking at an aerial map, it appears that this leg of the wye was right beside the east wall of the Bi-Mart store.

Here's the Sweet Home depot as viewed from the Weldwood-side leg of the wye.  The tail of the wye was the beginning of the 15½ mile Dollar Branch which crossed  southward over the Santiam Highway (US 20) and would have run right through the middle of the present day Dollar General store before turning southwestward.

The third picture is my BN clearance and train order for 06/16/72 for the 10:15 AM Sweet Home switch engine with conductor Carl Smock.  While we still had six months and ten days remaining of the two-year 14-hour HOS era, we didn't have that much business that day as Carl had 11'45" and I had 12'00" (15" engine inspection arbitrary).

Love photos of the 205, they bring out the care and craftmanship of George Lavacot's restoration of the loco.

Looked back a bit closer and the spot I was looking at was down by Murphy Veneer.

Thank you for the photos and info.  It's very nice to look at your train order and clearance.

Do you happen to know if the Sweet Home depot still stands?  Last I saw it was at the back (north) side of the City Public Works yard off 24th Ave., however the street view makes it appear to be gone.
