Could be a lot of places on the N&W.  My guess is west of Roanoke either on Christiansburg Grade, or east of Bluefield.  Hard to know for sure.  1987?

Hottest of superheated steam to cylinders ...over 740 F...

Looks like somewhere between 1987 and 1990. In 1991 they got the smokebox front a much lighter gray.

Haruo,
Yes it could be the S-curve and cut near Ingleside en route to Bluefield.  Do you know if this was a passenger excursion, or with coal hoppers?  I am thinking this might be the day they ran an excursion to Bluefield on the 1987 NRHS convention.  On that run 1218 pulled the passenger train to Bluefield.  611 was at Bluefield(I had chased it from Portsmouth a week or two earlier), and 611 pulled the passenger train back to Roanoke.  I skipped the 611 cause 1218 wound-up pulling 10-15 loaded hopper cars back to Roanoke, complete with a caboose.  Pretty nice.  So that trip would have gone through Ingleside.

After the convention I believe it went west to Bluefield this time with about 50 empty hoppers, followed by the excursion train consist.  You may have also been there for that.  The day after that the 1218 went west to Portsmouth with only the excursion passenger coaches.  The big deal there was shooting it at the high bridge at the town of. Coopers, WV.  As I recall this was the first time it went west of Bluefield, but I could be wrong without looking it up.

I know you were in the area in 1991 for the Huntington Convention, cause he followed me on a 1218 freight from Portsmouth toward Cincinnati after the convention was over.  This happened to be the last time it ever ran west of Kenova to Cincinnati, as it only ran through the fall of 1991.

gregscholl, thank you for your comments, I was there for three days.
The first day it rained, this was taken on the second day when the
sun came out.  I think it was pulling a passenger train. Haruo
