Steam & Excursion > In the cab - Switching with a Burlington 2-10-4Date: 05/06/22 14:22 In the cab - Switching with a Burlington 2-10-4 Author: MaryMcPherson Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 2-10-4 #6315 is best remembered for the end of her career, when she came up lame during an excursion with #5632 on September 6, 1959... never to run again.
Nearly a year before the locomotive was one of several still in regular service, working mine runs out of Centralia, Illinois. On October 20, 1958, Jim Adams loaded his recording equipment in her cab on a run down to the mine at Valier, Illinois. In this recording, we listen in as the crew and their steed go about pulling loads at the mine. Either the fireman or head brakeman can be heard relaying hand signals to the engineer, doing things as they were always done before the advent of radio. This photo was published in The Burlington Bulletin's issue "The Q In The Coal Fields." I recall reading that Mr. Smith hailed from England, and as such preferred to run his engine while standing.
2. On another day, #6315 arrives in Centralia with another Valier mine run. Jim Adams photos Mary McPherson Dongola, IL Diverging Clear Productions Edited 1 time(s). It does seem to be a double exposure here (either that, or the Ghostbusters could have found some good business here), but try reshooting it...

The file format from the editor I have on the P.C. takes a while to encode. That said, all I can do is upload to the platform. I can't fix it if the platform has a hiccup. It reminds me of when I was just a "wee shaver" and I would get to go to work with my dad in the late 40's and early 50's and ride around with him in the cab of a U.P. switcher (steam) and watch in awe as they switched the yards around Troutdale, Oregon! It sure doesn't seem like 70+ years or so ago!

thank you Rick z Date: 05/06/22 22:40 Re: In the cab - Switching with a Burlington 2-10-4 Author: MaryMcPherson 8 hours? Maybe not.
Several CDs worth? Yup. I'm working on it. Jim recorded cab rides on CB&Q 6315, IC 3511, IC 2608, IC 2527, IC 1536, C&S 641. He also did trackside recordings on both the IC, CB&Q, C&S and the Rio Grande narrow gauge in the pre-tourist line days. He also recorded aboard Rocky Mountain Railroad Club narrow gauge fantrips between 1961 and 1963, and made recordings of excursions with 4960. I'm slowly working my way through the master recordings. A 1522 member made a cassette that I listened to so much it wore out.

I'm GREATFUL for that, as it has saved me the step of having to scrounge up a reel to reel deck to do it myself. It's the .WAV files he made that I'm working off of. Kurt says he has a functional deck somewhere, but it turned out to be a moot point. Posted from Android Mary McPherson Dongola, IL Diverging Clear Productions |
