Who are these upstarts?
Author: Cumbresfan

As a long time supporter of the Cumbres and Toltec, I've been promoting their listing in USAToday's contest as the best scenic railroad ride in the US. Recently, C&TS has become #2 to the Colebrookdale Railroad in Boyertown (no relation), PA so I decided to look them up. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they have purchased steam locomotive #18 from the bankrupt SLRG/Rio Grand Scenic in Alamosa. They are restoring the engine to operation and have posted a couple of videos of the move from Alamosa to PA. included are interviews with several involved with the engine and move including Carlos Llamos now with C&TS. I have included a link to their steam program below.

But I'm still voting for C&TS as having the best ride.

Well guess there isnt much to ride back there behind a diesel C&T has the best narrow gauge  scenic  ride better than the D&S by far. Also it a longer ride with orgianl steam power and coaches.

Be tough to beat the variety of scenery found on the C&TS, that and lunch.

Colebrookdale has always had very good PR people. I can't imagine their scenery is particularly spectacular. Pleasant, I'm sure, but not spectacular.

I agree! C&TS has been getting my vote.  They could use the help also as far as PR is concerned.
18 looked great on some charter trains between 2008 and 2012.  Here is a preview of a video we did, so you can see the action. We produced this show about a year ago.
Glad it went to a new home where it will run again.

The fact that the Verde Canyon isn't even in the top 10 is the real blasphemy...

I'd sure put it ahead of a number of lines that are in the Top 10. The Strasburg as a Top 10 Scenic Ride?

When I checked the list, it ranked#14.  Go ahead and vote for the Verde Canyon Railroad and get all of your friends to do the same and perhaps it will move up in the rankings.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I voted for the Cass Scenic Railroad.

SLRG 18 in Pennsylvania

1 - San Luis & Rio Grande RR 18 arrived at Alamosa, CO, 31 January 2008.

2 - Monica Johnson was the fireman on SLRG 18 at Monte Vista, CO, 16 August 2012 shortly before #18 was stored.

3 - SLRG 18 arrived in the snowy San Luis Valley at Alamosa, CO, 31 January 2008.

Wishing the Colebrookdale Railroad in Boyertown, PA, operation great success with #18 this year.

Ever hear of the phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"? I've not visited most of the ones on the list (most of them are way farther west than I've ever been), but I was quite taken with the bucolic rolling farmlands on a recent visit I took to Strasburg... As a result, it got my vote...

C&T for the most part is unchanged from the time it started with its scenery vast vistas along the line that look the same today as when it started.

Where can one find the list ?

How does one vote?

First rode Verde Valley in 1949 on the mixed train.
