That is a great shot, especially that smoke plume and the milepost at the right.

Great picture! In addition to the fine show 765 is putting on up front, about 19 cars back, my 7 year old self was aboard my very first mainline steam excursion behind my very favorite locomotive.

My dad is from Cresson, PA, and had just come home from Viet Nam when he got to watch 759 climb Horse Shoe Curve in 1970. He was hooked! He didn't know about 765 until he happened upon a Railfan & Railroad story about the Van Sweringen berks in the winter of '83-84. He decided he had to show his boys the sister of his favorite locomotive. I'm so grateful he did! That first trip was an excursion between Brewster and Toledo on May 19, 1984. It was the first of many, many, many to follow.

For about 12 years Dad took me to as many 765 trips as he could afford. After that I took him. A hearty thanks to HICO, Fort Wayne, and all the other steam crews for making these splendid machines available for so many people to enjoy... including 3 generations of my family.

Thanks for the excellent shot of my favorite locomotive. While the smoke plume adds to the pic, that’s either a photo runby or a fireman in training. The boys at the FWRRHS run with a pretty clean stack, even back in 1984.

Blessings!

This may have been a fireman in training because I know it was not a  photo runby.

Gents, with all due respect to the commentary on smoke...there are plenty of reasons why a fireman may overfire or darken the stack that isn't related to photo runbys or "poor firing."
