Steam & Excursion > restoring 3985Date: 08/01/22 11:30 restoring 3985 Author: Bob3985 In tha last issue of the Streamliner magazine (UPHS publication) I recounted our effort to restore the 3985 from a display piece in the Cheyenne parking lot to an operating locomotive. Top photo is UP 845 (GP30) shoving 3985 into roundhouse for continued work on it. Second photo was the first fire up in January 1981.
At that time it became the largest operating articulated locomotive in the world, operating being the key word. That was until UP took on the 4014. Now the folks in Silvis will have an opportunity to bring it back to the rails once again. Bob Krieger Cheyenne, WY Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 08/01/22 12:48 by Bob3985. It was a ppleasure to help retore 3985 and eventually help operate it over the UP system.
I believe it will get tender loving care in SIlvis. Bob Krieger Cheyenne, WY Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/01/22 12:54 by Bob3985. Hope you don't mind a couple re-scans of my favorites from the May, 1994, trip to SoCal. First pic is westbound at Hesperia, 2nd pic is a few days later during a westbound photo runby near Martinez Spur; both locations on the AT&SF Cajon Sub.

The second photo appears to be me as engineer in 3985. Bob Krieger Cheyenne, WY Date: 08/01/22 16:15 Re: restoring 3985 Author: TheNavigator Bob3985 Wrote:

Yes, you're on the rear cushions with "Diesel Dave" in front. GK Date: 08/03/22 19:19 Re: restoring 3985 Author: ProAmtrak Bob3985 Wrote:
