WP&Y could lose 1/3 to 1/2 its customer this season.

MSN had another report of two more rock slides onto the WP&Y loading wharf so curse ships are shying away.   Some open ended container were used for passenger walking between ships and train and a photo shows how one was extremely disfigured by a giant rock from one of the slides.  Skagway does not have the money to control a mountain and need federal help.  Some ships are transferring passenger to lighter craft to reach the town.  I wonder if they can build a floating wharf in the center of the harbor away from the clefts.

There are two other warfs already in use. And they are using a tender from the Railroad dock that had the issue. So it's only one ship out of 4 missing. Not ideal, but not the end of the world.

According to reports on various cruise related sites, only 3-4 cruise ships have either missed Skagway or have plans to skip Skagway.  Keep in mind, the White Pass Railroad is now owned by Carnival Corporation, the parent holding company of several cruise ships brands including Carnival Cruise line.  Missing the White Pass and Skagway would put a big hurt on the parent corporation.

Looks like they just had another slide, so the whole pier might be out now. They still have 2 and can possibly tender too.... stinks for any rail fan as that is my favorite port.

That's too sad to hear, I for one would love to go up there and check the railroad out myself!

More bad news today from Skagway as a third major rock side has occurred and the dock/wharf used by cruise ships is now closed until further notice.  The City of Skagway is hoping for emergency funding to repair and stabilize the side of the mountain.   Thirty cruise ship stops have been canceled and that might represent about 30% of the seasons scheduled dockings.   Could be a major impact to the White Pass and its summer excrusion schedule.  The dock that is directly impacted is known as the Railroad Dock and the White Pass trains back out on to the dock to facilitate a direct transfer from the cruise ship to the excursion train.

My cousin got lucky this week.  His Princess ship docked Sunday (?) without any problems and he was able to book a round-trip on the WP&Y train on the dock.  That train ride is the only reason for visiting Skagway).

Any proposals for a Skagway-Juneau road? At least a seasonal one?

Just saw a pic they have two Shovelnoses stuck on the dock fearing moving them will cause more slide movement.:(
