Steam & Excursion > "New" WMSR Diesel Locomotive

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad recently debuted a former Norfolk Southern B32-8 painted and lettered in Western Maryland's earliest diesel scheme.  Some fans may object as WM never had such a locomotive (or any General Electric locomotive, except for a pair of 44-tonners).  However, I think the locomotive looks wonderful and look forward to seeing it in operation, along with 1309, during a future visit to Cumberland.

With a louder "chug" than the 1309, very nice.

I am truly impressed with the WMSR's work, after having seen it, first hand, in its original paint scheme four weeks ago. I and a hand full of others got a tour of the shops as a part of the WMRHS's 2022 convention.

The WM "purists" must be having a fit, but you have to admit it looks good. We must all remember that the type of locomotive that wore that scheme are getting more scarce and hard to come by, and maintain. So lets enjoy what has been done to bring attention to what was. Now if they would only paint the F40 into something comparable.

It looks good, and I don't think anyone would object to it more than 1309 painted in the WM colors.  It is the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, so I can understand if they paint their motive power for their railroad.

Looks like the long hood is considered "front/forward"

The important thing, does it have good dynamic brakes to bring the train down from Frostburg?

The locomotive is shown short hood forward towards Frostburg in the picture at the station.

In a better picture, look for the letter "F", an FRA requirement, 
to eliminate ambiguity, generally about shoulder-height.

When I clicked on the photo link of the above post...
THERE it is : a big letter F on the long hood end!
Not a requirement on steam locos...

Even PRR's GG1 motors had the letter F on one end...
(I'm not sure if it was the end that had the offset train heat boiler?)

Baldwin built some 2000hp passenger diesels for CNJ that had control cabs
on each end, in commuter service, early 1950s

But as long hood forward it is the proper orientation to lead the train back to Cumberland on it's return trip from Frostburg. Long Hood Leading.......eastbound



 

The front designation is there to keep employees from getting confused. When you tell the engineer to go forward you know which way the loco will go.
