Steam & Excursion > Possible reroute of hospital train over IAIS

I just heard a rumor that the UP hospital train will be re-routed from Council Bluffs to South Amana over the Iowa Interstate Railroad.  Until something is confirmed, I am only taking this with a grain of salt.  Though this hasn't been verified, there are not enough rested crews to take the train to Boone.  If this true, I heard the departure time would be 06:00 CST tomorrow & that CNW 401 would be dropped in Des Moines.  If anyone can verify or bust this rumor, please do so.

If that means they get it off the UP main and now have a crew (IAIS pilot with salary paid you know who) that makes sense.

Are they still nursing 5511's overheated axle(s), every couple of hours?

I have seen so may "experts" on social media today arguing with one another about it and professing so many solutions about what they are going to do my head is ready to explode. According to a local U.P. employee, they couldn't get a rested crew today and they were having power problems. Whatever that means. I can say this, we drove across Iowa today to chase it to Boone, all the way to council bluffs there were trains upon trains parked on the main line. When we got to council bluffs there was no activity around the hospital train so we turned around and headed home. On the way back, we noticed that the trains we passed earlier in the day were still parked in the same place. Obviously not a good sign. Supposedly they will depart tomorrow morning on the U.P. main line. I question This myself because they do have a schedule to keep to get the train to silvis for the Sunday morning event. Will see in the morning I guess.

The original route to Nevada, Iowa and get on the Rock Island to Des Moines.

The steam team has been putting in late hours love to see them  get some rest, cold as heck, and covid flu and colds are rampent, they need some R&R, perhaps a  couple buffets at a riverboat casino?  be nice to let this arctic cold go away

It has been officially confirmed that the train will be re-routed over the Iowa Interstate Railroad starting at Council Bluffs.  According the the UPHS, they plan to make it to South Amana by tomorrow evening.  As for the CNW 401, I don't know if they will drop it in Council Bluffs or in Des Moines.  I am personally assuming that the reason for the re-route is because UP was unable to get crews to take it to Boone.

0630 CST Update

CNW F was dropped in Council Bluffs. IAIS CBSW Crew OD 0600-18 to move from the UP to IAIS yard then take east to Atlantic. ATSW-18 Crew will take from there to Booneville or Des Moines then either the DMSW-18 or a extra crew from South Amana will take to SA from there.  Train is expected to be to Des Moines around 1700. But dont take as gospel on all things CAN Change.

Hammer some wedges in the springs and isolate the weight off of the overheating axle of 5511.  Forward and behind the protesting axle wedge between the springs and the frame to add the weight on that axle to the adjacent axles.

When all else fails call on another railroad to get the job done.

Yes,sadly, what a dog and pony show.

And here come the boo-birds.
I participated in one of those death marches and empathize with the crew.
If only they would listen to all the expert advice.

Any update on where the train may be on its way to Atlantic?

To be clear, I feel the crew is doing exemplary work, I'm not criticizing them. I am however pointing out the fact that the U.P. is super short on crews, (at least in this area) they have train upon train parked on the main line all across Iowa and as I understand the spine line is plugged up as well, is this how psr works? Furthermore, as I understand this is what prevented the move yesterday and what has put them a day behind schedule thus requiring them to resort to using a different road to maintain scheduling to get the donated equipment to silvis on Saturday.

They have a track warrant from CB to Atlantic as of 9am.

Maybe not throwing in the towel but getting smart with another option to get the train off the mainline and onto its destination, using an IAIS crew and trackage. Give the fearless leader and UP credit. They could have just parked it on a weed-grown industrial spur or in a yard and said the hell with it for now. I wonder who came up with the idea to put it on the IAIS--maybe someone from IAIS?
