The panograph was what was normally used. This unit had also been equipped with third rail shoes too, but they were removed after the third rail was taken out of service. Because the pan is raised by air pressure, the pole, which is raised by spring pressure, is used to pump up the air when the engine is cold. The pan is then raised for running. Date: 11/28/22 11:15 Re: Sacramento Northern 653 Author: Pig-Mauler When I was active at OERM, the pole was used because the overhead wire hangers were set up for trolley poles. It was a few years later that it was changed to allow pantograph operation for 653 and Key System 167.
