Plenty of steam on this foggy runby during the excellent Speer-Laramie excursion (diesels to Denver).

Meanwhile in Silvis, they are hard at work disassembling the locomotive. Current reports state they expect the restoration to take up to 3 years.

They were given a large of the collection. I doubt they are going to do anythig to tranish the the UP's generosity.

How did they do these trips back then without an extra water tender?  Did UP still have water spouts in some spots?

The trips with 3985 only operated between Cheyenne and Laramie, i.e. over Sherman Hill and return. They took fuel and water while in Laramie.

That's nothing. They managed to get 8444 and 3985 all the way to Sacramento and back in 1981 without any extra water tenders. While traveling on Southern Pacific west of Ogden, two SP diesels were cut in behind the steam engines so they could "drift" between water stops if need be.

Not just him Jack, had an argument on Facebook with a guy named Jesse Pitt who claimed the firebox is rusted and full of holes because Steve Lee ran her hard, I didn't buy that and he said he has pics to prove which I didn't buy either, turned out he's a jerk too!
