Steam & Excursion > 1522 Departing St. Louis

It's the morning of September 28th, 2002, and Frisco 1522 is departing St. Louis on a round-trip to Newburg, Missouri, for the next to last time.

As it turned out, this would be the last day I would see #1522.  I had planned to sleep in the van and do both days... until the van blew an exhaust pipe off the manifold of the driver's side of the V-8 while climbing the hill from Valley Park on I-44 that evening.  Fortunately, I had some ear plugs handy and slunk home on the back roads to avoid any objections from the local constabulary.

Not the exhaust I was hoping to hear!

I was riding that train on that very day, so thanks for sharing. BTW, it was a nice excursion .

PS. Did you record a few minutes of loud van exhaust? Sure ya did.

I had the ole camcorder on when it was really too dark for video.  I hoped to get the exhaust on tape but the wind through the vestibule was a bit much.  It was a great trip.  I chased the last one to Newburg the next day before heading home.

One thing I should mention... none of these photos was taken while I was concentrating on the photography.  I shot these with a squeeze-ball shutter release while working the sound recorder and estimating the train was roughly in frame.
