UP 3985 Restoration Update
Author: A-1

Railroading Heritage of Midwest America just posted an update on 3985 on Facebook. Tubes are coming out! Includes an interesting picture from inside the boiler as well!

Glad to see it in good hands and moving along.  Far better hands than where it was previously.   It is sad an ego contest caused it to sit unused for years.

Wasn't an ego contest, the 3985 was beyond repair.

In light of its present restoration process at Silvis,
what does 'beyond repair' mean, when it comes to 3985?

I seriously doubt that claim since the reasons 3985 wasn't gonna run kept changing!

And if you listened to those claims you come to the conclusion that it was beyond repair.

Not when the claims never had anything to back it up, especially the ones who said Steve Lee 'ran her hard' and if that was the case, she wouldn't of had her flues looking like they did from pics a few weeks ago, you wanna try to back up your claim?

Since I do not have a dog in this race, if it was beyond repair it is I assume being repaired now. So, it apparently not beyond. Enough money can always make the repair happen even if the only original part remaining is one bolt.

They are only performing the necessary work to do the ultra-sonic inspection/test per the FRA mandated 15 year re-certification. Thus, the only "repairs" would be those needed as they continue.

Yes, I'm a sarcastic old man, but sometimes it's so subtle, that it goes right over my head..
A grammitcal hint, like "quotes" would set the tone, better.

Like in : " beyond repair"...( moves it from being a statement of fact, to relating another's opinion....)

To say the least, you guys are dumber than a box of rocks!! About every other negative comment we heard was that Ed was
saying that the problems were serious giving the impression that it was beyond repair. Now all of a sudden that's all forgotten?
Dickens is who he is and early on he wasn't much. I remember a couple of tours where if you'd ask a question to one of his
guys which wasn't on the approved list you'd get a look of horror! I think he's mellowed a bit and whatever has happened is
truly in the past. But it's obvious from those tubes that the 3985 wasn't beyond repair.

I think Ed had a decision to make that was almost like Jekyl and Hyde.  On one hand, he hated the previous crew and 3985 was entirely their achievement.  On the other, Ed enjoys steam preservation and history.  So he donated it and was hoping most of the debate from years ago had gone away since we have not heard from Realist in years.  But who knows!  All I know is Hotwater has been right all along about 3985, the water treatment and so much more.  If Ed would have just manned up and never began bashing his predesessors like he had something to prove the flak he caught would have been almost non existant.

The problem at the time is the reason why 3985 wasn't ever gonna run again kept changing, that in my book told me they knew that 3985 only needed her 1472 besides the front drivers getting worked on and she'd be back up and running, can't wait to see her back and prove all the naysayers wrong though!

If 3985 isn't the perfect large excursion engine I don't know what is. It has power and enough drivers to apply it, it has
speed to not tie up the mainline and it's a great looking locomotive. It's new home will prove that!

Much more difficult without facial expression or voice intonation. Same goes for people who post sarcasm expecting people to know... as I said elsewhere, trying to be too clever can backfire on the Internet.
